The mission of The American Justice Project is to end malicious prosecutions which strip away the basic human and civil rights of American citizens on a daily basis. We advocate elected officials for more transparency and increased accountability, while fighting for the rights of the wrongfully convicted who were denied a fair trial and subsequently sentenced to a lengthy prison term for a crime which he or she did not commit.
The vast majority of individuals who are serving prison sentences are African American men. Many are innocent of the charges lodged against them and have been strong-armed by prosecutors into taking plea deals or pleading guilty to crimes which were not committed. The end result of such bullying is the loss of freedom and dignity caused by mass incarceration, as well as citizenship which is most often never restored upon release from prison.
The Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Eighth, and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution were designed to protect the rights of the accused during criminal proceedings. As such, procedural due process rights are inherently granted to defendants and should be a matter of practice for prosecutors. However, this is not the case in the overwhelming majority of courtrooms across the country and very seldom are prosecutors punished for their misdeeds.
